King Joash follows God while his uncle is alive, but abandons Him upon his death, turns to idols, and kills his own cousin who is trying to warn him.

Commentary
Second Chronicles 24 continues the story of Joash, the child king whom Jehoiada had protected from Athaliah and placed on David’s throne. Joash begins his reign at only seven years old, and the chapter immediately gives an important qualification: he does what is right in the Lord’s eyes “all the days of Jehoiada the priest.”
That phrase becomes the key to understanding Joash’s life. His early faithfulness is real, but it is heavily dependent on Jehoiada’s influence. Joash follows the Lord while a strong spiritual mentor stands beside him, yet later events reveal that the king’s own heart has not become equally steadfast.
One of Joash’s major accomplishments is repairing the temple. Athaliah and her sons had damaged the house of God and used sacred objects in the worship of the Baals. The temple that Solomon built and earlier kings maintained had been neglected and plundered.
Joash tells the priests and Levites to collect money throughout Judah for the repairs. When the Levites are slow to act, Joash questions Jehoiada and changes the process. A chest is placed outside the temple gate so the people can bring the required contribution more directly.
The people respond generously. Officials and citizens bring money joyfully until the chest is filled again and again. The funds are then handled by trustworthy officials and used to hire masons, carpenters, and workers skilled in iron and bronze. The temple is restored to its proper condition and strengthened.
This part of Joash’s reign reflects genuine wisdom. He recognizes neglect, organizes a practical solution, establishes accountability, and ensures that the resources are used for their intended purpose. The chapter even notes that the workers acted faithfully, showing that spiritual renewal often requires ordinary qualities such as honesty, planning, craftsmanship, and persistence.
When the repairs are completed, the remaining money is used to make utensils for the temple. Burnt offerings continue regularly throughout Jehoiada’s lifetime. Worship has been restored, and Judah appears spiritually stable.
Then Jehoiada dies at the remarkable age of 130. He is buried among the kings in the City of David because “he had done good in Israel, and toward God and his house.” Although Jehoiada was not a king, his faithfulness earns him royal honor. His influence preserved David’s line, restored true worship, and shaped Judah for decades.
After Jehoiada’s death, the leaders of Judah come to Joash and bow before him. The king listens to them, and the nation abandons the temple of the Lord and begins serving Asherah poles and idols.
The contrast is sudden. Joash had once repaired the temple; now he abandons it. He had once supported sacrifices to the Lord; now he permits idolatry. The change reveals that external reform is not the same as inward transformation.
God responds by sending prophets to bring Judah back. Again, Chronicles emphasizes that judgment does not arrive without warning. The Lord sends messengers because He desires repentance, but the people refuse to listen.
Then the Spirit of God comes upon Zechariah, the son of Jehoiada. He stands before the people and asks, “Why do you disobey the LORD’s commandments, so that you can’t prosper? Because you have forsaken the LORD, he has also forsaken you.”
The message echoes the covenant warning repeated throughout Chronicles. Judah cannot abandon the Lord and still expect the blessings of fellowship with Him.
Joash’s response is shocking. At the king’s command, the people conspire against Zechariah and stone him to death in the courtyard of the Lord’s house. The son of the man who saved Joash’s life is murdered by Joash himself.
This is one of the darkest examples of ingratitude in the book. Jehoiada protected Joash as an infant, risked his life to restore him to the throne, and guided him for decades. Yet Joash does not remember that kindness. The chapter explicitly says he “didn’t remember the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him.”
As Zechariah dies, he says, “May the LORD look at it and repay it.” Jesus later refers to the murder of Zechariah when condemning Jerusalem’s history of rejecting God’s messengers (Matthew 23:35). His death represents the recurring pattern of people silencing the prophetic voice rather than repenting.
Judgment follows quickly. A relatively small Syrian force invades Judah and defeats a much larger army. They destroy leaders, plunder the kingdom, and send the spoil to Damascus. The Chronicler explains the reversal clearly: Judah had forsaken the Lord.
Joash himself is severely wounded. His own servants then conspire against him because of his murder of Jehoiada’s son and kill him in his bed. He is buried in the City of David, but unlike Jehoiada, not in the tombs of the kings.
The contrast is intentional. Jehoiada, a priest, is buried with kings because of his faithfulness. Joash, a king, is denied royal burial because of his unfaithfulness. God’s evaluation of a life is not determined by position but by faithfulness.
Joash’s story is a powerful warning about borrowed faith. He knew how to act faithfully while Jehoiada was alive, but when that influence disappeared, his deeper loyalties were exposed. He needed more than a godly mentor; he needed a heart that personally sought the Lord.
The chapter points us toward Jesus Christ, the perfectly faithful Son of David. Unlike Joash, Jesus remained obedient to the Father to the end. He did not silence those who spoke truth but embodied the truth Himself. Where Joash repaid kindness with murder, Christ repays rebellion with grace for all who repent and trust Him.
Life Application
Second Chronicles 24 challenges us to distinguish between personal faith and borrowed faith. It is possible to live faithfully because of a parent, pastor, spouse, mentor, church community, or Christian environment without developing deep personal dependence on Christ. Those influences are gifts, but they cannot replace a heart that seeks God directly.
Joash’s temple repairs also remind us that spiritual renewal requires practical action. Neglect does not repair itself. Whether the issue is a damaged relationship, inconsistent prayer life, neglected responsibility, or church need, restoration often requires planning, generosity, accountability, and patient work.
The chapter also warns us about how we respond to correction. Joash had once listened to Jehoiada, but later he killed Jehoiada’s son for speaking truth. When our hearts harden, correction begins to feel like attack. A spiritually healthy person remains willing to hear uncomfortable truth, especially from Scripture and faithful believers.
Joash’s ingratitude challenges us to remember those God has used in our lives. Gratitude should shape how we speak, act, and treat people who have served us faithfully. Forgetting past kindness can make pride and entitlement grow quickly.
Finally, the contrast between Jehoiada’s burial and Joash’s burial reminds us that God measures differently from the world. Titles, authority, and public success do not determine a faithful legacy. A priest can be honored among kings, while a king can lose honor through rebellion. What matters most is finishing faithfully.

Is my faith personally rooted in Christ, or mostly supported by the faith of people around me?
What neglected area of my spiritual life or relationships needs practical repair rather than good intentions?
How do I respond when someone confronts me with truth I do not want to hear?
Have I forgotten or taken for granted people God used to protect, teach, or guide me?
If my strongest spiritual influence were removed, what would remain of my own commitment to the Lord?
Guided Prayer
Thanksgiving: Thank God for faithful mentors, pastors, parents, teachers, and friends He has used to guide and protect you.
Intercession: Pray for younger believers and those whose faith depends heavily on others. Ask God to give them deep, personal roots in Christ.
Petition: Ask God to make your faith personally steadfast, give you humility to receive correction, and show you what neglected areas require repair.
Confession: Confess any borrowed faith, ingratitude, resistance to correction, idolatry, or tendency to rely on spiritual influences without personally seeking the Lord.
Praise: Praise God for His patience in sending correction, His faithfulness to those who seek Him, and His justice when truth is rejected. Praise Jesus as the faithful Son of David who obeyed perfectly and remains worthy of trust to the end.
